A New Approach

Pattern Theory was developed by Jon McAteer, UKCP registered psychotherapist and tech consultancy owner.

The approach integrates leadership, culture, and organisational design theory with psychotherapy theory.  It provides a framework for identifying, exploring, and changing ineffective psychological and behavioural patterns in leaders.

Theoretical foundations

Pattern theory is an integrated approach based on robust multidisciplinary theory and research.

Leadership and organisation theory

Chris Argyris’ organisational theory, based on 10,000 business case studies over 50 years, provides the business focus for Pattern Theory.

Psychotherapy theory

The executive coaching principles are grounded in developmental and practical psychotherapy theories including attachment, relational psychodynamics, and cognitive behavioural therapy.

Neuropsychological theory

The Pattern Theory process is informed throughout by neuropsychological theory from leading researchers such as Porges and Schore.
